Motherhood and the Supermom Phenomenon

Mother’s Day is this Sunday….I love being a mom, it is my passion. I am beyond blessed to have been given the opportunity to live out my passion, but my heart goes out to the moms of this generation who are flooded with the messages in our culture that in order to be a fantastic mom, you need to be a SUPERMOM. Bekah sent me this article a few days ago and we want to share it with you. I love Family Life Today and support their ministry. This article is called 8 Ways to be a Super Mom (Not Supermom). This is a must read….it will encourage you in every aspect of motherhood.

Motherhood-Supermom has super powers.

She is able not only to keep her home immaculate; she bakes and cooks from scratch all of the meals she sets before her family on the handcrafted table she whipped up over the weekend after seeing a DIY project on her Pinterest board. Supermom is also a fantastic manager. She runs a tight ship. The home’s schedule runs like clockwork, and she makes certain her children are not tardy to anything. This woman could not only run a small country, she could probably do it in her sleep. She is also a super wife. Although sometimes Supermom is super tired, she must put her fatigue on the back burner in order to be emotionally and physically available for her hubby.

Now I am certainly not trying to beat anyone up for this little phenomenon. We women are strong. Capable. Clever. Competent. Resourceful. But sometimes these strengths can transform into weakness because we don’t take into account one little thing that we women also have: Limitations.

If we don’t realize our limitations, we can soon find ourselves physically incapable of carrying …

Developing Faithfulness in Friendship

Faithfulness in friendship is a gift! How many of us truly cherish the friends we have that are willing to risk loving us? It is costly to love someone enough to open up our heart, to be vulnerable, to let them in. But the risk is totally worth it because the benefits are life changing! Love takes grace and forgiveness. Faithful friendship take commitment. Commitment can be inconvenient. But we need friends, friends who will listen to us share our hearts, challenge us to be better wives and mothers…..people who hang in there when we are struggling and show us compassion when we are hurting. “We deeply want to have our people. Close friends and mentors don’t fall in our laps. You search and invest and then you allow them to be imperfect versions of what you were hoping for in your head. Most of us are waiting to be invited, waiting to be pursued, waiting for friends to come to us. But this is not the way it happens.” (quote from a book by Jennie Allen called Restless) We need to take action. Pursue friendships with a passion, show kindness, patience, meekness, humility, gentleness, compassion and selfless willingness to serve. (Colossians3:12-15)

Love is action. Initiate deep conversations by asking great questions, actively listen and give honest answers. Share your struggles, ask for wise counsel and listen when advice is given. Pray together with your close friends as this habit takes your friendship to an even deeper level! So ask God for insight and discernment as you seek out faithful friends. Pray for guidance. Ask deep questions. Share your own struggles. Think of ways you can meet the needs of your friends.

Today I witnessed the blessings that come from faithful friendship. Bethany invests in people. She is willing …

Faithful and Consistent

This month we are focused on the theme of FAITHFULNESS.  The definition of faithful that struck me the most was these words: steady, loyal, constant.

I thought of how we can easily apply faithfulness to our lives and that is by being CONSISTENT.

Consistent in moving forward and allowing God to work in us and through us with devotions and prayer.

Consistent to see God’s hand working in our daily life by keeping a gratitude journal.

Consistent in our marriage by devoting time to connect and grow together.

Consistent in goal setting and daily actions that move us forward.

Consistent in our health by choosing foods to fuel us, and fun things that move us.

A mindset of consistency motivates me because it is a focus on progress, forward progress, NOT perfection. So embrace the hard days, embrace the crazy times, and know that God is always with you and when you are faithful and steady He will use you for greatness because we were made to THRIVE!

Clean Eating Made Easy

Have you joined us in the April Clean Eating challenge? I’m already having so much fun and making great changes–DELICIOUS changes to my meals and attitudes about healthy food. Healthy food can taste SO good.

I want to help you make it easy but sharing this new app I discovered called Mealime.IMG_2779

It is simple to use and really convenient. You set up a meal profile based on dietary needs, foods you don’t like, how many people you are feeding, and how many meals you want. I started with 4 meals. It generates 4 meals for you and you can easily swipe and switch a meal you don’t like.

IMG_2790

The app provides a complete grocery list for your meals then breaks down cookware needed, ingredients needed, and instructions for each meal.

The pictures are great, the prep was simple, and the meals have been tasty. I really don’t like to try new things and I tried 4, yes 4 new meals just this week. I even made 2 dressings from scratch AND made my own tortilla chips. How’s that for clean eating?!!

The best part? The app is free! I’m so excited for you to try it out. Let me know what you think!

Finding Peace Through Healthy Living

Over the past year and a half I have found a place of peace by making health a priority. Not only have healthy choices had a physical effect of peace, but knowing that I am making positive choices has the effect of mental peace. Our bodies are a precious gift from God and should be taken care of. We should not obsess over food and exercise and outward appearance, but we can and should care about our health.

IMG_0768

One way I have found peace through healthy living is with exercise. Mayo clinic lists the top 7 benefits of regular exercise as weight control, combating disease and illness, improving mood, boosting energy, better sleep, improved intimacy, and FUN.

Another way I have found peace through healthy living is in healthy friendships. Jim Rohn states, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” So choose to spend time with people that support and encourage your healthy habits. You will have accountability AND friendships based on healthy shared interests are fun and likely to last.

One of the most important ways I have found peace in my health is through nutritional cleansing. Nutritional Cleansing provides a solution for environmental impurities we cannot avoid and nutrient deficiencies in our food. Knowing that I am helping my body detoxify itself and nourishing my body as I strive for long term health gives me such peace as I navigate a busy life and learn to be a healthy role model for my family. As a parent, we have so much responsibility in our children’s health. I want to show my girls how to make healthy choices and live the way God designed us – happy and healthy. Feeling great and having energy is such a source of peace and something …

Cookie Cutter Puppets

Last week the girls wanted to do a craft on a rainy day. I gathered all my craft supplies too see what we could make at the last minute. (You know I’m a “last minute mom” crafter!).  I LOVE Pinterest, but sometimes it stresses me out and I get lost in the rabbit hole of ideas. This month we are focused on PEACE, this fun last-minute craft was easy and easy = peaceful in my house!

We came up with these fun cookie cutter Easter puppets.

Supplies:

Paper

Easter Shaped Cookie Cutters

Markers and Crayons

Fun paper straws

Hot glue gun

Any fun crafty things to decorate your puppet

Instructions:

  1. First we traced our cookie cutters. If we had more time for drying it would have been fun to paint and stamp with the cookie cutters first.

2. Color your shape.

3. Cut out your shape and add decor. Big kids would have fun cutting out their shapes by themselves.

4. Use your hot glue gun to glue your puppet shape to the straw.

5. After your puppet has dried it is time to enjoy and play! My girls turned their puppets into fairy wands.

Make it your mission

pic from http://futureperfectcoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/what_is_your_mission.jpg

What values do you live by? How do you make decisions? Do you know your why? Who are you really?….. These are all good questions, and I may have a way to help you focus in on an answer… Have you ever thought about creating a personal mission statement? Start here first to discover your why… then continue on with the rest!

Here are the benefits to doing so. The website www.doanwinkel.com has some great info on making a mission statement. They say,

“One of the most powerful methods to cultivate the passion of vision is to create and live by a mission statement, philosophy, or creed. Such statements capture what you want to be and do—what qualities you want to develop, what you want to accomplish, and what contributions you want to make. Clarity on these issues is critical because it affects everything else—the goals you set, the decisions you make, the paradigms you hold, and the ways you spend your time. A personal mission statement based on correct principles becomes a standard for an individual. It becomes a personal constitution, the basis for making life-directing decisions and daily decisions in the midst of the circumstances and emotions that affect your life.”

Wow, do you want to live this way? I sure do. Have clarity, know my decisions, know who I am…

An empowering Mission Statement…

  • Represents the deepest and best within you. It comes out of a solid connection with your deep inner life.
  • Is the fulfillment of your own unique gifts. It is the expression of your unique capacity to contribute.
  • Addresses and integrates the four fundamental human needs and capacities in the physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions.
  • Deals with all of the significant roles in your life. It represents a lifetime

Packing the Hospital Bags

I’m 38 weeks pregnant today and after my doctor’s appointment yesterday, we were instructed to have our bags packed to be ready any day in the next couple of weeks! They are mostly packed with a few more odds and ends that need to be thrown in at the last minute. I am usually quite the extensive packer, feeling like I would rather have too much than too little but I tried to find a good balance for this trip – packing for the ideal situation while also keeping reality in mind of what can happen throughout labor. So, I am going to give you the list that I came up with after looking at plenty of other lists to pack our hospital bags. However, I am sure that I am packing more than I will actually need, so in a few weeks I will write another post on what I actually used and/or what I wished I had included!

For Baby:

  • Going home outfit (including Socks, Mittens, and Accessories such as a headband)
  • Swaddling Blanket
  • Nursing Cover
  • Cute toy or prop for first photos

Love Challenge for a Great Marriage

This past Sunday at church we heard a powerful sermon titled, “5 Keys to a Great Marriage.” I loved the sermon and took lots of notes since these words on marriage are direct from the marriage expert himself- G-O-D.

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” -Genesis 2:18

IMG_9713

1. Marriage is God’s Design

Did you know that marriage represents THE most important relationship of all: the relationship between Christ and His church.

2. Treat Your Spouse with Love and Respect

It is important to remember that love is a cycle, a relationship between two people. Often when we aren’t getting something we want, it stems from us not GIVING what the other person needs. It works like this: wives want love and husbands want respect. If a wife isn’t getting the love she wants, rather than think, “My husband isn’t loving me like I need him to.” Think about your role. The only person you can control is YOU, so take a look at what you are doing. Are you showing your husband the respect he needs so that he can in turn show you the love you need?

3. You Need a lot of Forgiveness

You and your spouse are flawed. Show them grace and forgiveness because there is FREEDOM in forgiveness.

****

I also loved the challenge the pastor gave us at the end. He told us to do these 2 things:

1. Say one nice thing to your spouse every day. “I love you because…”

2. Do one nice thing a day for your spouse.

These might seem like simple things to do, but sometimes it’s the simple things that can have the greatest impact. Sometimes it is easy to get in …
