Release Control

Why do I try to hold on to it so tight? Why do I act like I can’t let go? Do I live by its my way or the highway mentality? Am I that stubborn? Am I that much of a control freak?

What I have realized is my problem is that I don’t trust God enough.  If I did, I would let him be in control.  If I trusted He is who He says He is, if I trusted his way, trusted his sovereignty, I would let him be in control. If I am working so hard to take control, that must be because I think I can do it better. Which is way off. God doesn’t even need me. He loves me. But he doesn’t need me. I get the blessing of being a part of His family and His plan when I join His team. What happens when a player tries to take control of the game without listening to the coach? It never goes well does it? The coach knows what they are doing and has the best interest of the players at heart. So we can’t take the control that isn’t meant to be ours. We have to trust the coach.

In the Bible there are countless stories of people trying to take things into their own control rather than trusting God. It is obvious when there is a big catastrophe or a larger consequence for actions of taking control.  But what about the little ways? What about the small things we have in our own lives that we think God doesn’t see. Or we think he doesn’t care about.  He wants everything.  He is God.  Wouldn’t you rather have the God of the universe in control rather than faulty, messed up humans?  I mean, we try to put our best foot forward and be our best self, but it still is nowhere compared to the Creator of the Universe. Why would we even try to take control when we have Him on our side, coaching our team.

What are the little things in your life that you think it is okay if you have control of those things? God can have a few categories of your life, but you want the rest. Nope, that doesn’t work.  That isn’t what God has called us to do.  He has called us to throw off everything that hinders us, to carry the cross, to live in our new life. You can’t have one foot in and one foot out.  It’s either all or nothing.  So it is time to decide who gets control. Do you want something that is doomed to fail, even with its best effort? Or do you want something that is victorious in the end, the process has peaks and valleys, but it is working towards the goal of victory. Nothing can compare with that.

Jeremiah 17:7-8
But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

James 1:6
But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
