Get Your Zumba On

Do you often get tired or bored by your usual workout routine? Do you feel like you are just going through the motions with your runs or weight lifting? Or do you feel like you never know what to do at the gym so you would just rather not go? If so, try something new! There are so many different classes and workout routines out there that can really help to motivate you to live a healthy lifestyle and get into the shape that you have been wanting! Because there is such a variety of styles of exercise classes or workout schedules, you are bound to find one that fits your health regime! However, there is a specific class that I would recommend to those of you who just haven’t found your exercise niche — ZUMBA!!! 😀

When I finished playing college softball, I was excited to be able to choose my own workouts! However, when we decided that we were moving to Grenada, I was worried that I would have a greater challenge finding a gym and having the accessibility to do my exercise. A couple weeks into our move, I was lucky enough to find a gym that gave a great “student” discount (works for the “SO” too- that’s my title here for “Significant Other”) and they had some classes that I thought I would try out! By the end of our first term in Grenada, I was doing Body Pump, Yoga, Pilates, and Step classes at my gym,  as well as enjoying the (usually very hot) Caribbean air on runs with my hubs! (I would recommend any and all of these classes- great ways to tone and stretch all different parts of your body and they are fun too!) What I didn’t know was that Zumba was quickly going to be added to my gym class list…

When I went to the gym for the first Body Pump class of the new term, our instructor told me that there was a slight change in the schedule. Instead of Pilates being after Pump, they were doing a 6-week trial of a Zumba class. I had never done Zumba before so I figured, Why not?! I’ll try it! I wasn’t really sure of what I was getting myself into! On a side note, the majority of the ladies that I take classes with (and a couple men who occasionally show up) are from all over- US, Australia, Europe, Grenada- and most of them are quite older. Oh yea, and did I mention that I cannot dance…at all. But, I figured, well if they can do it, I can do it!

Pump ended and I was excited to see what my first Zumba class would be like! Most of the Zumba instructors I have ever seen before have been high energy, fit ladies. Our instructor walked in and was a young GUY from Spain named Kevin. He was wearing high adidas socks, adidas sambas (for all you soccer players, remember those?!?), soccer shorts, and an adidas cut off top. He began setting up his computer for the music and I start hearing whispers and giggles. All of the older ladies were making comments about how cute they thought our instructor was! There were even “cougar” comments being made! Haha

Since I had never actually participated in a Zumba class, I didn’t really know what to expect. The way this class was run was we would exercise to one song/do one routine, take a very short break while Kevin picked a new song, and then we were back at it! The breaks were hilarious- every time we would stop after the song was over, the ladies would all turn to each other and say things like “I can barely focus, I’m so distracted because he is soo cute!” And I even heard one woman say, “Now I am officially a cougar!” 🙂

Another funny part of class was a small Grenadian man who came into class at the beginning with a lot of energy. At first, it felt like he was making a joke of the class- laughing and not really paying attention to the moves we were supposed to be doing. But further into the class, I realized that he was just having a really good time! He didn’t seem like he knew what he was doing half the time, but he sure was having fun doing moves on his own!

(You don’t even have to do the dance moves (haha) as long as you are moving around, you are getting exercise!)

So, my final assessment of my first Zumba class: Half the time I felt like I was in a boy band with the cheesy steps and moves we were doing to the music. Another part of me was thinking,  MAYBE if I had any type of Latin or Spanish blood in me I could move or shake my hips like our teacher. And the other part of me felt like I was getting a pretty good work-out and I had a really fun time doing it! Most of the time, I truly wished that I was getting “Wii Just Dance” points and star points at the top of my screen while I was dancing….That really would be the ultimate exercise dance class!

(However, if you do not think you could handle Zumba in a public setting- even though most of the people in the class have no idea what they are doing- They now have a Wii Zumba game to do in the privacy of your home 🙂 )

In conclusion, there are plenty of ways nowadays to get exercise and have fun! Try something new! TRY ZUMBA! You may feel like an idiot, but I think you would be surprised by how much fun you would have and what a great workout you get! And, hey, what better way to lose those love handles than to shake yo’ hips! 😀
