Car Seat Strap Covers

Car seats have changed so much over the years but they remain the most important safety device made for babies and children. The straps are an integral part of the safety each seat provides and it is very important that the straps are tight enough to function properly. The problem with that concept is that the webbing can potentially rub on a child’s neck and shoulders especially in the summer when kids are wearing short sleeved or scoop necked shirts or onesies. So, my daughter, Rachel and I designed some strap covers and made them out of a remnant, leftover from the fabric of her beautiful ring sling baby carrier.IMG_3066

I will walk you through our process step by step. You can use whatever fabric you want but a soft woven fabric is best because it is comfortable and breathable.

1) First we took an existing pair of strap covers and measured out our pattern.IMG_3031

2) Our pattern was 6 x 8 1/2 inches and we cut it out of cardboard.IMG_3029

3) We cut out 2 pieces of fabric for each set we were making.IMG_3033IMG_3032

4) Next, we ironed each edge to make a hem. We pinned the hem and then sewed each edge carefully with matching thread.IMG_3036IMG_3039

5) Once the straps were hemmed we took four pieces of velcro (either 1 inch circles or squares) and pinned the velcro in place and sewed them in place.IMG_3045

6) Now both Rachel’s girls have carseat strap covers that are cute and comfy.IMG_4948

What creative sewing project would you like to learn how to sew?
Send in a request to our comments and I will work on it for one of my future posts.
