Bringing in the Harvest

In the gospel of John, chapter 4, verses 34-35, Jesus says, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work. Do you not say ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

Jesus is referring to a harvest of souls, people who are longing for love, security and a deeply significant purpose and direction for their lives. The disciples think he is speaking of a literal harvest of grain. Jesus often uses word pictures to get us to think outside the box. His words challenge us to find significance in our day to day lives and to use our circumstances to reflect His light and His love in our choices and behaviors.

Growing a vegetable garden has many benefits. Not only will it provide nutritionally beneficial food for you to enjoy at your dinner table, it can engage your children in a family project that will provide lasting memories. During the process of planting, watering, fertilizing and caring for your garden you can find teachable moments to share with your children. As the plants grow and you begin to harvest your tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers or whatever you have planted, think about the joy of watching the seed grow and produce a fantastic harvest.IMG_4972

A seed of faith can start to grow in the heart of one of your friends as they watch your life and observe your Christ-like behavior. They may begin to ask questions, challenge your motives or want evidence to support your beliefs. Do not be afraid to share your testimony, what Christ has done in your life. You may be part of the growing process that helps them grow in their faith.

One of my favorite quotes, is by St. Francis of Assisi. He says, “Share the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words!”
