Becoming a Well Versed Family

As we raise our kids, what framework are we using to enable them to formulate a Christian world view? As their understanding of the world around them develops, where are they going for stable moral values and truth? Our culture today is changing rapidly and we need to be aware of the influences out there that are challenging our children. We need to be equipped to teach and train our children so they can develop a moral compass and build a framework of faith that will stand as they grow.

Hiding God’s word in your heart is a worthwhile practice. The bible is God’s word to man that reveals His character and His wisdom through truths that help us face every life circumstance.
God’s word is alive and active and gives us a connection to the heart of the creator of the universe.

Psalm 119:9,11 “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word. I have hidden Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You”

God’s word enables us to live above mediocrity. We can use God’s word to instruct our children in the teachable moments in the lives of our kids.

Here are some tools that we used when the girls were young to begin to introduce our girls to the blessings and benefits of bible memorization.

GT and the Halo Express
This is a series of songs that uses scripture as the actual words to the song so your kids learn passages of the bible while they sing the songs.
Abeka alphabet bible memory cards These are the alphabet bible cards that we used with our girls. You memorize one verse for each letter of the alphabet. I would make up a short sing song melody for each verse.
Navigators Bible Memory system
This is a fantastic bible memory system where you memorize verses that tie together by topic.
Awana
This is a fun and wonderful activity club for children held at many churches. Our family has wonderful memories from our Awana days. Awana clubs have a strong emphasis on bible memorization and they make it fun and rewarding!
And here are a few books that I have recently become familiar with that give great parental support and practical ways to help you teach your kids scripture and biblical truth.

Caroline Boykin’s “The Well Versed Family” A great tool for teaching bible memory to your children…A fresh approach to Scripture memory that really works!…A powerful, one-of-a-kind resource designed to inspire and equip your family to know and love God’s word.” This is a great tool you can use to help raise strong kids of faith through the power of scripture memory.

Susan Hunt’s “Big Truths for Little Kids“-a systematic way to teach biblical truths to kids (ages 3-12, usable for family worship) This book provides questions and answers to teach your children and scripture to pray over them. It is a form of systematic theology-incorporating and discussing a full spectrum of family life issues like salvation, forgiveness, death, This is a child friendly book using a question and answer method  with memorization to help the children develop answers to the big questions in life that most people ask. The author then uses stories to demonstrate how children can actually use what they have learned in real life situations. The feedback about this book, from parents who did not grow up in a Christian home, is that they feel empowered and equipped to train their own families on how to live out their faith in their neighborhood.

I am passionate about bible memorization because the word of God is powerful and life changing!
Give some of these tools a try and see how fun it can be to help your children hide God’s word in your heart. With God’s word hidden in your heart, you and your kids can shine for Jesus!

“Don’t shine so that others can see you, SHINE so that through you others can see Him” C.S.Lewis

What tools do you use in your family to encourage memorizing scripture?
